Lessons Plans for Secondary
The following lesson plans are suitable for a number of different courses within the secondary panel Grade 9-12. Each lesson plan contains links to downloadable slide decks, videos, links to related resources as well as interactive curriculum connected activities.
To what extent are the objectives of UNDRIP being realized in Canada?
In this lesson, students will explore the concept of human rights in the context of the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. They will engage in discussions to build a stronger understanding of human rights and Indigenous Rights. They will revisit their thinking throughout the lesson. Students will analyze UNDRIP in the news and rate the extent to which the objectives of UNDRIP are being realized in Canada. As a class you will explore the timeline of the implementation of UNDRIP in Canada and students will work with a partner to engage in meaningful research to complete the timeline started in 2016 by selecting and justifying six significant events.

Understanding Historical Roots
Students will explore events and place them in chronological order in groups. They will analyze the timelines using the thinking concept of Continuity and Change. The purpose of this lesson is to activate prior knowledge and give students an understanding of the historical roots of colonization.

Genocide - How has the Canadian government committed genocide against Indigenous Peoples? How is this ongoing today?
In this lesson, students will explore the definition and stages of genocide. They will explore evidence in small groups and categorize each piece of evidence into one of the 10 stages of genocide (Gregory H. Stanton). Students will consolidate their thinking in the form of a PEJ (point, evidence, justification). Individually or in small groups students can explore what now by educating and informing others.

Students will explore the treatment of Indigenous children through history and make connections to contemporary issues. Students will make connections between Residential schools, the 60’s Scoop, and the overrepresentation of Indigenous children in care. As a class, we will investigate contemporary issues and actions that need to be taken in order to meet the Calls to Action and UNDRIP. Students will engage in a group inquiry and share an action that will create awareness and educate others as an impactful ally and active citizen.
